Our 2017 Business Director, Abigail Siegal, explains how significant Cummins’ contribution to the UM Solar Car Team has been, saying, “While our team has always built an electric car, this year we were also moving away from from our traditional path, making a shift from using a catamaran design to a bullet-shaped car. The ultimate goal is that the team will be more diverse and every member will feel comfortable proposing new ideas and asking important questions. But with R Systems’ support, we could complete a CFD simulation in not one day, but two hours. Through our work with the Offices of the President and Provost, the team has developed a five-year Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan of our own that parallels the ones developed by the College of Engineering and the University. I am looking forward to sharing many more memories with him and cannot thank him enough for all that he does for us. That’s not even getting into all the aspects that comprise the vehicle’s aerodynamic design. The Formula Sun Grand Prix is a track event that is held on grand prix or road style closed courses. At Roush facilities and with the guidance of Roush expertise, the University of Michigan Solar Car Team built the carbon fiber body of our car, Novum, which brought home Michigan’s strongest Bridgestone World Solar Challenge finish yet, 2nd place. “The Solar Car Challenge is a unique educational endeavor, and we are honored to back the talented students at Ben Barber.” The Solar Car Challenge was established in 1993 as an extracurricular program with the initiative to motivate student interest in science, engineering, and alternative energy. In 2015 and 2017 we finished 6th and 9th respectively. Our Operations Director, Peter Rohrer, highlights how significant Roush’s support is to the success of the Michigan Solar Car Team, saying, “Roush’s unparalleled workspace and expertise in composites manufacturing are a crucial asset to us, allowing us to have total confidence in the performance of our vehicle’s structures, which are made entirely of composite materials.”. “I'm ecstatic we had the opportunity to work with them as a sponsor!". When we built Novum, Ford milled plugs from our tooling board for us to use in our composites manufacturing process. Injecting smoke into the wind tunnel, for example, granted the team an opportunity to observe with great visualization where Novum has flow separation along its aerobody. We would not have been able to do all of this in our base of operations, the Wilson Student Team Project Center; Roush made Novum’s construction possible, and made the construction process run that much more smoothly. Chuck’s contributions didn’t end there, though. In our day-to-day lives, we are rarely more than 10 feet away from 3M technology. The models take about six hours to run, which was quickly enough for our Strategy Division to analyze the results during the race and make important tactical decisions pertaining to speed and charging locations while on the road. 3M is a company rooted in scientific exploration and discovery, and they are ever evolving. We were experimenting with a new aerodynamic design, and consequently had much to think about in terms how we would adjust our race strategy to meet this new design. The engine must run, the wiring must connect, the driver interface must be well put together, and the motor must be fully functional. Electrical safety and true automotive grade durability were paramount, to say the least. But designs cannot be improved upon in a timely fashion if they cannot be assessed quickly, and on a typical desktop computer, running just one CFD simulation can take an entire day. The challenge teaches high school students around the world how to design, engineer, and build roadworthy solar cars. This allowed us to maintain the fast pace our design and build cycles called for. Their knowledge and analysis of the crack formations on our previous wheels allowed us to fine tune the wheels we ended up using. “Without IMRA’s support, Novum would not have been financially viable,” 2017 Race Crew member and the team’s resident financial wizard, Neil Jain, explains. For the 2015 race cycle, 2016 American Solar Challenge, and our most recent 2017 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, 3M provided us with a multitude of equipment including, but not limited to: DP 460 glue, 471 vinyl tape, electrical tape, glass bubbles, duct tape, sandpaper, orbital sanders, full body suits, and respirators for safety. Being able to accurately forecast solar irradiance is an integral part of our ability to travel so fast and so far on nothing but the sun, so we are forever appreciative of the support of companies like Solargis. During the design phase, Novum’s aerodynamic efficiency was always a top priority. Students will be challenged to design and build the solar car to meet performance criteria. All these tests and coefficient calculations had far-reaching benefits for Michigan’s racing efforts. That, and the Lightyear launch means Solar Team Eindhoven won’t take part in this year’s race. Having durable, reliable, and versatile equipment is integral to the survival of any vehicle, but ZF’s wheels went above and beyond. Thanks to the reliable wheels we had machined by ZF, we were able to move full speed ahead—both literally and figuratively—to our first-ever 2nd place Bridgestone World Solar Challenge finish. Schools are encouraged to use the solar car kits to run an in-school solar car challenge at the end of the unit, where students test their designs. Every part is crucial to the other part, and systems work in tandem to produce the best possible result. First and foremost, this means Roush provided UM Solar Car with vital access to a large, professional workspace for prepreg composites manufacturing, providing us the best possible venue to undergo this process. These give a real professional feel to our electronics and generally improve the appearance. The Eindhoven University of Technology’s Solar Team Eindhoven has gained fame in recent years. It would take pages to fully describe the value that 3M so graciously provides us as a team, but the overarching idea can be summed up in one phrase: 3M holds us together, both literally and figuratively. IMRA’s support and donations to the University of Michigan Solar Car Team over the past eight years were crucial to the team’s second place finish in the 2017 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge across the Australian outback this past October, and to our ability to race in the 2018 American Solar Challenge this summer. University teams participate in order to give their students experience in designing high technology cars and working with environmental and advanced materials technology. The American Solar Challenge is a competition to design, build, and drive solar-powered cars in a cross-country time/distance rally event. Solar Car Challenge - Pottstown, PA - A Pottstown teen recently competed in the 16th Annual Hunt-Winston Solar Car Challenge. Our engineers assigned material properties to the geometry of Novum’s CAD designs, and then applied loads using HyperMesh®, which illustrated the stress and strain values throughout the structure. On October 20 2011, the Tokai Challenger solar car drove quietly into Victoria Square in the centre of Adelaide, winning the 2011 World Solar Challenge.. These teams have won the past four of these races. This solar array is not only highly efficient, but also very expensive. The first step, free size, gives a continuous distribution of material thickness; the second, size, accounts for the individual thickness of each ply; and the third, shuffling, recommends the order in which each ply should be laid. “For the more experienced members, it lets the team squeeze every last ounce of unnecessary weight out of our components,” Perry details. The team also performed other air flow tests at different yaw angles. Students tend to ask ‘why’ and ‘why not’ a little bit more than experienced engineers and drive innovation and creative thinking.” Jacobs also notes,  “The students who get into teams like solar car and really contribute are those that are in it because they want to be engineers and work on cutting edge technology.”. The University of Michigan Solar Car Team was excited to partner with Cummins for the first time! With one a day, that would mean 200 days, and the team did not have that kind of time to wait around for results to come in one by one. Ford also influenced our race operations, providing us with our Lead, Chase, Scout, Weather, and Media caravan vehicles in Australia to support Novum’s trek across the Outback. Thanks to our Michigan-based partner Saturn Electronics, we were able to power through this uncharted territory with all our systems working smoothly due to the high-quality circuit boards they provide us with. They got back to us almost immediately and gave us twice the computing power we normally get, allowing us to complete the design on schedule.” Within the span of just one week, UM Solar Car ran around 100 simulations with the computing power R Systems provided. Under the theme of “Dream bigger. The aerodynamics simulations, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tests, require a great deal of computational power, and R Systems provided us with that power. Altair’s OptiStruct® solver also aided in composite analysis, running optimizations that our engineers could base on certain criteria that they assigned. It's part race, part science show, where high school and uni students from heaps of different countries build a solar car from scratch then they race it … This cycle, Chuck also provided the team with monetary support that helped us make the dream of Novum a reality; when our engineers were working on Novum’s design, the largest hurdle the team faced was financing the car. As the University of Michigan came close to finalizing Novum’s design, R Systems proved very accommodating and supportive, helping the team when problems with the timeline arose. Then, resin was applied via resin infusion and the plies were then “debulked,” or compacted in a vacuum bag. In 2019, CalTeach hosted it's first Solar Car Challenge on March 16th, 2019. Elcon Precision supported UM Solar Car by helping us optimize our car’s battery pack; Elcon supplied our team with copper tabbing, which allowed us to custom-design our battery pack. Having an efficient and well-connected high voltage system allowed us to move forward and perform to our highest potential. Once the optimization process is completed, UM Solar engineers polish it and make the model manufacturable before again checking the analysis for all the different load cases. Even though the Solar Car Challenge has been delayed until next summer, we haven’t stopped working towards our goal of creating a successful, competition-ready solar car to bring to the Texas Motor Speedway in July of 2021. And ZF was there for us to ensure that Novum, our smallest solar car, would move forward.
